Game Recap: Baseball |

Lancers wrap up season at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's baseball team ended the 2017 season with a doubleheader at Taylor on Monday night.

The games went very differently with one contest ending in extra innings and one being decided after the first inning.

In the opener, the teams had to be separated in extra innings. Taylor produced the winning moment in the eighth inning to pull out a 12-11 victory.

The Lancers (15-31-1, 7-20 Crossroads League) held a large lead in the game before suffering a late collapse. Grace pulled ahead 9-1 after its at-bats in the top of the fifth, but the Trojans (24-16, 20-7 CL) had other plans in mind.

In the third inning, Gavin Bussard and Hunter Ackerman hit back-to-back doubles to start Grace's scoring, and later Ackerman plated on a ground ball to put the Lancers ahead 3-1.

In the top of the fifth, two home runs keyed a six-inning spurt for Grace. Chase Baker belted a three-run shot to left field, and Shay Hepler laced a two-out, two-run homer to right. By the time Taylor finally retired Grace in the inning, the Lancers led 9-1.

But the Trojans incredibly tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Taylor used two homers to spark an eight-run frame to tie the game.

Both teams scored twice in the sixth, and neither side could push across the winning run in the seventh.

In the eighth, a Chase Baker double was wasted, and the Trojans ended the game shortly after. A solo homer by Taylor with one out ended the game 12-11.

Bussard finished 3-for-4 with two runs and a double, Chase Baker hit 2-for-5 with four RBIs, and Austin Baker went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Ackerman had 3 runs, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base, and Hepler drove in a pair.

In the second game, Taylor used its momentum to roll over the Lancers. The Trojans scored seven runs in the first inning on their way to a 19-1 victory.

Austin Baker had two of Grace's four hits in the game, including a double, and Jordan Noska and Mitchell Enyart had the other hits.

Scottie Clark tossed the final three innings for Grace, striking out eight batters.

The doubleheader officially ends the careers of Grace's graduating class: Chase Baker, Blake Converset, Joe Dougherty, Logan Grigsby, Shay Hepller, Jason Stevens and Matthew Warren. Grace's 15 wins this season under Cam Screeton were the team's third-most victories in the past 15 years.
