WINONA LAKE, Ind. – In a hotly contested match late in the Crossroads League season, Grace's men's tennis team fell 5-4 on Tuesday to Huntington.
Although the Lancers (7-2; 6-1 CL) squandered a chance to win the regular-season league championship outright, Grace can still clinch a share of the title on Thursday in their finale against Marian at Miller Field.
"This was a crazy close match with four of the six singles going three sets," said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. "The big advantage was in doubles. We started off slow, and they took advantage of that. We look forward to seeing them again, knowing that we will be better prepared at doubles to play stronger."
Jack Wang and Ethan Grove produced a strong 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles, but the Foresters (9-2; 7-1 CL) won at the top two doubles' spots to go ahead.
Four of the six singles' matches went into three sets as Jose Marval at No. 2 and Ricardo Bedon at No. 6 battled to victory.
Michael Humphrey also won at No. 5 doubles 6-1, 7-5, but the Lancers could not produce the final point needed for the team win.
Grace is in pursuit of a share of its second straight Crossroads League championship. Prior to last season, Grace had not tasted a league title since 1989.
