MARION, Ind. - Grace's men's tennis team sent a group to participate in the ITA Regional Championships last week hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.
Seven from the team competed in the singles main draw.
Facundo Paredes earned the No. 7 seed in the field of 64 followed by
Javier Gallego with the No. 9 overall seed.
Parades made a deep run in the tournament reaching the semifinal. His first two triumphs were won in straight sets, the next in a third-set tiebreaker and the last in straight sets. He battled hard in the semifinal, but fell 4-6, 6-7 (5).
Pablo Gregori was the victor in two matches, where he knocked off the No. 12 seed in the opening round. Both were won in straight sets with relative ease 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2.
Gallego,
Francisco Margaria,
David Sandi and
Nicolas Doria each moved on to the second round before bowing out. Both of Gallego's matches needed a third set tiebreaker to determine a winner.
Ramiro Candia lost his first round session, but picked up one win in the consolation bracket.
Over in the singles B draw,
Cesar Garcia notched a victory 8-4 in the first round.
The doubles main draw featured four pairings for the Lancers. Parades and
Ivan Antinori, the No. 6 seed, made it to the quarterfinal round where they matched up against fellow teammates Gallego and Gregori. Team bragging rights went to the latter as they moved on 8-6.
Gallego and Gregori couldn't keep the run going in the semifinal, falling 8-6.
Partners Sandi/Margaria and Candia/Doria each won their opening round fixture, but were unable to advance further.
Grace will close out the fall season with two matches this week. One at home against Indiana Tech on Oct. 4 and the other at Grand Valley State on Oct. 8.
