BACK TO BACK: Grace XC sweeps NCCAA championships

JOPLIN, Mo. - For the second straight year, Grace's cross country teams swept both of the NCCAA national championships.

The women and men repeated as national champs after winning their first titles a year ago.

Jake Poyner was named the NCCAA national coach of the year for both men's and women's cross country, repeating those honors from a year ago.

"Both teams ran tactically-sound races today. Up front in both races, the goal was to win together and win controlled; both the men and the ladies did that to a tee," said Grace head coach Jake Poyner. "The rest of the group ran well, including some big personal bests. I'm humbled to coach two fantastic teams of selfless individuals. We are excited for what's ahead of us next weekend at NAIAs. Now we focus on rest and recovery."

Grace's women were led by Kylie Sauder and Heather Plastow, who crossed the finish line even at 18:05.1 for first place.

All of Grace's women finished in the top 16 overall. Mallory Hiatt joined Sauder and Plastow as All-Americans; Hiatt earned seventh place with a time of 18:48.5.

Freshman Morgan Welch impressed in her first national race, placing 11th with a time of 19:06.7.

Katie Acker (13th place) at 19:20.9, Anna Hulstedt (14th) at 19:25.8 and Tara Friesen (16th) at 19:33.4 also nabbed strong finishes for the Lady Lancers.

The men's side also had an individual national champ. Logan Rufenacht crossed the finish line in first place at 25:34.1.

Bryan Hernandez-Rios (25:34.2) and Dimitri Margaritidis (25:34.4) were whiskers behind Rufenacht to finish second and third nationally.

Cole Johnston earned a sixth-place finish (25:49.8), and Brandon Kleber (25:53.8) was right behind in seventh place.

Justin Van Prooyen (26:12.9) also earned a top-10 finish, and Hayden Mullett (26:32.9) rounded out Grace's performance with a 12th-place showing.

All top-10 finishers earn All-American status, resulting in six of Grace's seven runners for the men claiming All-American distinction (Rufenacht, Hernandez-Rios, Margaritidis, Johnston, Kleber, Van Prooyen).

The Lancers have one race remaining: the 2022 NAIA National Championships. Grace's men and women will race on Friday morning in Tallahassee, Fla., for the NAIA race.
