MOBILE, Ala. - One of the most successful seasons in program history came to an end on Wednesday for Grace's men's tennis team.
The Lancers fell 4-0 to No. 3 Keiser in the NAIA Second Round, officially concluding the 2023-24 season.
Grace ends the year with a record of 22-6, enjoying the most wins of all NAIA teams to date. The team clinched its second straight berth to the NAIA National Championships thanks to winning the regular season and postseason tournament championships in the Crossroads League.
Despite the 4-0 scoreline, Wednesday's clash between Keiser and the Lancers was littered with close matches.
Salva Pons and
Pablo Gregori narrowly lost 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Javier Gallego and
Manuel Marques were leading 5-4 in the latter stages of their match at No. 2, but the Seahawks managed to grab the point first with a win at No. 3.
During singles' play, Grace had three unresolved battles at the top-three courts.
Gallego dropped the first set but was winning 2-0 in the second set at No. 1 singles. Pons (at No. 2) barely lost in a tiebreaker in the opening set but was up 1-0 to begin the second set. Gregori handily won 6-2 in his opener and was even at 3-3 in the second set against his No. 3 opponent.
But the Seahawks managed to wrap up the match by winning in straight sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. The Lancers were forced to adjust their singles' lineup from their usual spring look, moving
Cesar Garcia to No. 5 and
Landon Gibson to No. 6.
Grace has now made three trips to the NAIA tournament across the past four years under head coach
Andy Lewis.
