Grace lets match with Taylor slip away

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's volleyball team had Taylor University up against the ropes leading two sets to none on Saturday afternoon at the Orthopaedic Capital Center.

But the Trojans held onto second place in the Crossroads League with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory.

The Lady Lancers (17-11; 10-6 CL) imposed their will in front of an energetic home crowd in the first set, dominating in a 25-12 win. Grace recorded 15 kills on just one attacking error for a pristine hitting percentage of .519 while holding Taylor to a .000 hitting percentage.

Grace continued to impress with a seven-point win in the second set that was clinched on a kill from Alicia Gosney. Grace's defense once again came up strong as the Trojans (19-11; 12-4 CL) struggled to a .049 team hitting percentage.

Taylor made adjustments and found their rhythm on offense with their backs against the wall. The Trojans won the third set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-18.

The Trojans got off to a fast start in the tiebreaking fifth set with the first four points. Grace responded with a clutch run to cut the lead to 8-7, and the match went back-and-forth down the stretch with the Trojans holding on for a 15-13 win.

Grace recorded 55 kills as a team with 92 digs, their third highest total for digs on the season.

Dana Johnston led Grace's offense with 15 kills on a .353 percentage, and Hannah Clemmons had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Arielle Walters led the team with two solo blocks and four block assists, Alix Underwood produced 10 kills, and Calah Kruse had a career-high 24 digs.

Bethany Whitcraft had 21 assists and 15 digs, and Sarah Tullis handed out 25 assists.

The Lady Lancers continue Crossroads League play on Wednesday with an away match against Marian at 7 p.m.
