Grace downs Marian, advances to semifinals

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Hannah Clemmons highlighted a strong performance from Grace's volleyball team as the Lady Lancers won in four tough sets against Marian on Tuesday in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament.

The Lady Lancers (22-13) next advance to the tournament semifinals with a matchup at rival Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday at 7 p.m. Grace and the NAIA No. 8-ranked Wildcats split their two matches in the regular season.

Clemmons tallied a double-double with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 14 digs to pace Grace's efforts.

The Lady Lancers found themselves in a hole in the first set, falling behind early to the Knights (14-14). But freshman Alix Underwood provided a tremendous spark off the bench with five kills in the opening set as the Lady Lancers rallied late for a 25-23 win.

Grace was forced to make up ground in the final stages of set two to force extra points. Clemmons registered seven kills in the second set, many of which in timely situations, to lead Grace's comeback. But the Knights were up for the challenge this time as they held on for a 29-27 win.

The defense of the Lady Lancers paved the way for a third-set win as Marian was held to a .029 team hitting percentage. Grace tallied eight more kills in a 25-18 victory.

Grace gathered an early lead against Marian in the fourth set, eventually serving for match point at 24-17. Marian did not go down without a fight as they won four pressure-packed points before an Arielle Walters's kill ended the match 25-21.

The two-setter attack for Grace allowed the Lady Lancers to record 15 more kills than Marian. Three Lady Lancers joined Clemmons in double-digit kills, including Underwood and Walters with 11 kills and Dana Johnston with 10.

Walters had a career-best seven block assists, Johnston had five solo blocks, and Stefanie Bolt added five block assists.

Annie Salazar produced a team-best 23 digs, and Sarah Tullis (25 assists) and Bethany Whitcraft (24 assists) led Grace in assists.
