Lady Lancers pull away late from Aquinas

Box Score

MARION, Ind. – Grace's women's soccer team netted two late goals to put the final touches on a strong 3-0 victory over Aquinas College on Friday.

Jocelyn Evans registered the only goal for the game's first 81 minutes, but Grace's defense remained stout to prevent an equalizer from the Saints (2-3).

Mallory Rondeau put the Lady Lancers (6-1-1) ahead by two goals with a strike at the 81:09 mark, and Emily Hickerson added the insurance goal five minutes later for the final margin of victory.

“The women finished a good match today. We had decent possession through the first half but really took it to another level in the second half,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “Our excellent possession resulted in two brilliant goals. I'd love to see this carry into tomorrow and the rest of the season.”

Freshman Carianne Sobey was a key figure in Grace's midfield as she assisted on Grace's first two goals. Grace earned a corner kick in the 14th minute, which Sobey took. She curled her cross to the near post, and Evans drove a headed ball past the goalkeeper from eight yards.

After coasting to start the second half, Grace picked up steam at the halfway point and controlled play through the end. After a long period of possession, Sobey dribbled in from the left side of the field. She turned down a potential shot to play Rondeau in stride, and Rondeau drilled in a goal from close range.

Grace's final goal came from another extended bout of possession. Rondeau turned by a defender to draw a second one to herself. She in turn slotted a pass to Hickerson who scored from 12 yards at the 86:37 mark.

The Lady Lancers controlled the stats in the first half with a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Aquinas picked up the pace shortly after halftime, tallying six shots to Grace's four. But it was the Lady Lancers who scored twice in the second half to seal the win.

Carmen Barnhill made three saves in goal to give Grace its fifth shutout of the 2012 campaign. The Lady Lancers are currently No. 1 in the nation with five shutouts.

Rondeau led all players with four shots. Ten Lady Lancers recorded a shot in the match.

The Lady Lancers take on Missouri Baptist at 5 p.m. tomorrow to wrap up their nonleague schedule.
