WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's men's tennis team found themselves in a battle with Goshen College on Saturday as the Lancers pulled out a crucial 6-3 victory over the Maple Leafs.
With only one week remaining in the regular season, the Lancers (5-1; 5-1 Crossroads League) have now won three straight league matches to remain one game out of first place in the standings.
The Lancers helped their cause immensely by winning all three doubles matches. Michael Blevins and Nikola Todorovic at No. 1 doubles and Aaron Blevins and Daniel Sanchez at No. 2 doubles won by the identical scores of 8-4.
Jack Wang and Michael Humphrey rounded out Grace's doubles points with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Despite a three-point advantage, Grace was not out of the clear as nearly every singles point came down to the wire.
Michael Blevins was victorious by the score of 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and his brother Aaron earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
Wang completed Grace's scoring with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
The Lancers won at least three games in each of their singles sets against the Maple Leafs.
“This was another tough, tough match. The 6-3 score doesn't justify how close it was today,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. “This was one of those matches where we were in every single match. We could've won 9-0 or we could've lost. We need to make sure we're playing our top game each time out as this conference is difficult across the board.”
The Lancers next enter the final week of the regular season. Grace will travel to Huntington on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match. They will return to Miller Field on Thursday against Northwestern Ohio before welcoming Saint Francis for the regular-season finale on Saturday.
