FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Grace's volleyball team opened up the Indiana Tech Tournament on Friday with a pair of matches. The Lady Lancers took down Olivet Nazarene 3-1 before falling in four sets to No. 22 Cornerstone.
The Lady Lancers (13-6) dropped the first set to Olivet Nazarene before rattling off three consecutive wins in convincing fashion.
The Tigers (4-14) had their best set of the match in the opener, tallying 13 kills in an eight-point win. Olivet Nazarene could not manage more than eight kills in a set over their final three losses, however.
Grace responded with a fury, winning 25-19 and 25-21. The Lady Lancers peaked in the fourth set with 17 kills in a 25-17 win.
Christina LeBlanc handed out 45 assists, including 15 to Dana Johnston, who took home match honors in kills.
Arielle Walters tallied 11 kills and three block assists, and Alicia Gosney had 10 kills and two block assists.
Bethany Whitcraft amassed a match-high 15 digs, and Hannah Clemmons added 14 digs and six kills.
Grace struggled mightily in the early stages of their second match of the day with No. 22 Cornerstone. The Lady Lancers had eight errors in the first set to allow the Golden Eagles (11-3) an easy win.
The Lady Lancers countered with a dramatic come-from-behind win in the second set. Grace was on the verge of defeat as Cornerstone was serving for the set with a 24-22 lead. The Lady Lancers showed their mettle with four straight points to even the sets at one apiece.
The third and fourth sets were neck-and-neck to the end, but the Golden Eagles eked away with 25-20 and 25-23 wins to take the match.
Freshman Katie Brueck had a breakout performance, pouring in a team-high 20 digs in four sets. Walters had her second strong performance of the day with 11 kills on a .526 hitting percentage.
Johnston recorded 10 kills, 1 solo block and 2 block assists, Calah Kruse had seven kills and 17 digs, and Stefanie Bolt added six kills and four block assists.
The Lady Lancers conclude the weekend with early matches against the host Indiana Tech at 10 a.m. and Aquinas at noon.
