GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grace's volleyball team won its sixth match in seven tries with a split on the opening day of the Davenport Tournament.
The Lady Lancers (17-6) dropped a tough five-set decision to Aquinas to kick off the tournament before recovering in a dominant sweep of Michigan-Dearborn.
In their first match of the day against Aquinas, Grace claimed the first and third sets to put itself in position to win the match. Calah Kruse sealed the first set with two straight kills as Grace won 26-24. Dana Johnston scored Grace's final two points of the third set as Grace won another close set, 25-23.
Aquinas battled back with a 25-20 win in the fourth set to send the match into a fifth game.
The Lady Lancers let an early 6-3 lead slip away as the Saints ended the match on a 12-5 run to claim the victory.
Kruse and Johnston led all players with 19 kills apiece with Kruse tallying a match-high 29 digs. Aquinas's blocking effort suppressed Grace to a .127 hitting percentage. Freshman Megan Johnson chipped in with eight kills, and Annie Salazar added 24 digs.
Grace made a quick recovery in the second match on Friday against Michigan-Dearborn. The Lady Lancers dismantled the Wolverines in three sets, winning 25-14, 25-16 and 25-11.
Dana Johnston was lethal with nine kills on 17 attempts for a .529 percentage. Calah Kruse tied Johnston for match honors with nine kills, adding 13 digs as well.
Hannah Clemmons produced 13 digs defensively, and Jessica Scherb and Kaitlin Kerrigan each aced twice. Grace Woolsey finished with six kills on a .462 percentage, and Ellie Harp amassed 24 assists and four kills.
The Lady Lancers conclude the tournament on Saturday, taking on the host Davenport at 12 p.m. and Ashford at 2 p.m.
