GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grace's volleyball team wrapped up the Davenport Tournament with a pair of losses to No. 24 Davenport and Ashford.
Strong offensive performances from Dana Johnston and Calah Kruse were not enough to propel the Lady Lancers (17-8) on Saturday.
Davenport and Grace started evenly in the first set before the 24th-ranked Panthers made their push. Davenport took a 16-15 lead and scored the next five points en route to a 25-18 win.
The Panthers continued their momentum into the second set, claiming a 16-8 advantage. The Lady Lancers displayed its resolve by mounting a massive comeback. Grace scored 11 of the next 13 points to slice Davenport's lead to 18-17. Their charge ran out of steam, however, as Davenport recovered to win 25-20.
Grace opened up its largest lead of the match in the third set with a 17-12 cushion. Grace still held a 20-16 lead before watching it fade late. The Panthers outscored the Lady Lancers 9-2 down the stretch to complete the sweep.
Calah Kruse led Grace offensively with 12 kills, and Dana Johnston pounded out 11 kills on a .360 percentage. Hannah Clemmons had match honors with 14 digs.
Grace's defense struggled in the final match of the tournament, falling in three sets to Ashford.
Ashford hit over .250 as a team in each of the three sets as Grace managed just one block point. The Lady Lancers recorded nine fewer digs as well, nullifying strong offensive performances from Dana Johnston and Calah Kruse.
Grace's best set of the match was in the opener in a 25-23 defeat. The teams were knotted at 20-20 before the Saints converted late to pull off the two-point win.
The Saints produced 16 kills in the second set and 15 kills in the clincher to complete the sweep of the Lady Lancers.
Kruse recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs to pace Grace, and Johnston led the team with 13 kills and two service aces.
Jessica Scherb finished with 16 digs, Annie Salazar had 10 digs, and Ellie Harp dished out 32 assists.
Despite the losses, Calah Kruse was named to the All-Tournament Team for her outstanding weekend as Grace's outside hitter.
The Lady Lancers have a three-match homestand next week. Grace will host Marian on Wednesday, Bethel on Friday and Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.
