WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's volleyball team seemed on its way to an easy win over Marian on Wednesday evening when the Lady Lancers won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17.
But the Knights had other plans as they secured a 3-2 victory to knock off the injury-depleted Lady Lancers.
Grace, who was missing starting middle hitter Alix Underwood, outside hitter Calah Kruse and setter Taylor Baird due to injury, put the Knights (13-9; 10-5 Crossroads League) against the ropes with wins in the opening two sets.
Freshmen Gabby Dunlap (14 kills) and Kaitlin Kerrigan (13 kills) stepped up in the lineup to produce their best numbers of the season. Dunlap's ferocious kill clinched the second set for Grace at 25-17 as the Lady Lancers (17-9; 8-6 CL) had all the momentum on their side.
The Knights recovered, however, with an eight-point win in the third set and a five-point win in the fourth.
Grace led 7-5 midway into the decisive fifth set before Marian rallied. The Knights went on an 8-1 run to claim a 13-8 lead. The teams traded points down the stretch which allowed Marian to escape the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center with a 15-10 win.
Dana Johnston paced Grace with 14 kills to go along with a solo block and two block assists. Hannah Clemmons led all players with 24 digs, and Jessica Scherb had three service aces with 13 digs.
As a team, Grace had a .157 percentage while holding Marian to .137.
The Lady Lancers shift their focus to home matches on Friday and Saturday against Bethel and Indiana Wesleyan respectively. Grace will host the top two teams in the league standings at 7 p.m. on Friday (Bethel) and at 3 p.m. on Saturday (Indiana Wesleyan).
