WINONA LAKE, Ind. – A strong display from Dana Johnston was not enough to propel Grace's volleyball team against Indiana Wesleyan at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on Saturday.
The Wildcats recorded 20 more kills than the Lady Lancers (17-11; 8-8 Crossroads League) to hand Grace a 3-1 defeat in Grace's regular-season home finale.
The first set started evenly as Grace held a slight 11-10 advantage. The Wildcats ended the set on a 15-8 run, however, to win 25-19.
The Lady Lancers refused to fade, however, picking up a clutch 29-27 win to knot the match. Grace held a 22-18 lead before the Wildcats battled back to tie the score at 23-23. The teams traded tense rallies into extra points. Kills from Calah Kruse and Johnston sparked the Lady Lancers to a two-point win at 29-27.
Indiana Wesleyan overwhelmed Grace in the third set, holding a comfortable lead for much of the game. The Wildcats hit over .300 as a team to win 25-14.
Grace's struggles carried over into the fourth set as the Lady Lancers recorded a hitting percentage under .100. The Wildcats, on the other hand, had 16 kills in a 25-13 clinching victory.
In her last regular-season contest at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center, All-American middle hitter Dana Johnston pounded out 15 kills on a .538 percentage. Johnston had just one error in 26 attempts.
Freshman Gabby Dunlap added 12 kills at a .304 clip, and Calah Kruse finished with six kills and 16 digs. Hannah Clemmons added 12 digs, and Ellie Harp passed out 31 assists.
The Lady Lancers have just two league matches remaining in the regular season, starting with a trip to Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match. Grace will also travel to Cornerstone University for a tournament next weekend.
