Grace lets three close sets slip to Mt. Vernon Nazarene

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Grace's offense was stifled to a .128 percentage in a hard-fought 3-0 loss against Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.

The Lady Lancers had seven more assists and three more kills than the Cougars (13-14; 8-9 Crossroads League), but Grace was unable to score points when it counted, falling 26-24, 29-27 and 25-22.

Mt. Vernon's strongest set came in the opener as they tallied 15 kills and four errors. The game went into extra points before the Cougars pulled away for the two-point win.

Errors plagued the Lady Lancers (17-12; 8-9 CL) in the second set. Grace's 17 kills should have been enough to even the match, but the team's 10 attack errors allowed the Cougars to take a thrilling 29-27 set.

The Cougars clinched the match in the third set with a 25-22 win. Grace's defeat allowed Mt. Vernon to move into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with the Lady Lancers.

Dana Johnston tied for match honors with 14 kills on a .344 percentage. She also tallied 7 digs, 1 solo block and 2 block assists.

Calah Kruse had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, and Hannah Clemmons recorded 21 digs. Taylor Baird passed out 28 assists, and Jessica Scherb, Baird and Annie Salazar tallied nine digs apiece.

Grace will hope to snap its six-match losing streak this weekend with its final regular-season tournament of the year. The Lady Lancers will play Rochester, Aquinas and Cornerstone on Friday in the Cornerstone Tournament before taking on Clarke on Saturday.
