Oakland City eliminates Grace in regional championship

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – Grace's volleyball team ended its 2013 season against Oakland City in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Championship on Friday.

The Lady Lancers (20-17) struggled on the offensive end with a .140 hitting percentage as the Lady Oaks prevailed in four hard-fought sets.

The teams split the first two sets. Oakland City won the opener 25-20, and Grace responded with a 25-18 win in the second. The Lady Lancers excelled offensively with 16 kills and just two errors in their second-set victory.

Oakland City put Grace against the ropes with a 25-20 win in the third set, setting up a fierce fourth-set battle. The Lady Lancers were plagued by 11 attacking errors in the fourth game but still kept pace throughout. The Lady Oaks sealed a place at NCCAA Nationals, however, with a 25-23 win.

Senior Dana Johnston concluded her remarkable career with a team-best 15 kills and two block assists. The middle hitter finished her career with 1,672 career kills – fifth in team history. Her 520 kills this fall were the eighth-most for a single season in Grace's program.

Calah Kruse tallied 13 kills and 17 digs for her 18th double-double of the year, and freshman Kaitlin Kerrigan added 10 kills, 20 digs and 2 aces. Ellie Harp handed out 45 assists and 15 digs, Hannah Clemmons had 17 digs and Grace Woolsey chipped in seven kills.

The Andria Harshman-coached Lady Lancers earned 20 wins this season for the third consecutive year – the first time Grace had accomplished that feat since 1999-2001.
