Women's Tennis picks up first league victory

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – An impressive doubles' performance led Grace's women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over St. Francis on Friday.

The Lady Lancers earned their first Crossroads League win of 2013 by claiming all three doubles points over the Cougars.

"Today I thought we set the tone early with our doubles play. We were much more aggressive than we were last match, and it carried over into singles play," said Grace coach Scott Moore. "I thought all the girls did a much better job reducing errors, and we made the correct shot when necessary."

Jayna Huber, Gabrielle Lawrence and Sarah Hinkel each won a pair of points for Grace. Huber and Lawrence teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, and Katie Etter joined Hinkel for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Kristin Cassidy and Mariah Zumbrun completed the doubles' sweep 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

Huber went on to win 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Hinkel won in three tense sets at No. 4 singles, and Lawrence claimed a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.

The Lady Lancers next face a stiff test on Saturday when they host perennial league power Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at Miller Field.
