Early lead vanishes in loss to Spring Arbor

Box Score

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's men's basketball team surrendered a 20-point lead on Wednesday, falling 64-57 to Spring Arbor at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The Lancers slip to 8-8 and are still looking for their first win in the Crossroads League (0-5).

Grace seemed well on its way to victory in the first half. Logan Irwin buried three treys in the first 5:11 of action, and the Lancers claimed a dominant 34-14 lead on a 3-pointer from Greg Miller. That 20-point lead was erased all too quickly, however.

The remaining eight minutes of the first half belonged completely to the Cougars (8-9; 3-2 CL). Spring Arbor ended the half on a 19-3 run, closing the gap to 37-33 entering the halftime break. Grace's only points over the last eight minutes came on a 3-pointer by Niko Read.

The Cougars continued to claw away at Grace's advantage, eventually taking their first lead of the contest at 45-43 with 13:29 to play. Overall, Spring Arbor's run was 31-9 stretching across the two halves.

Grace battled back three minutes later as baskets from Read and Irwin lifted the Lancers to a three-point advantage. But the Cougars swung the game back in their favor with back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead for good.

The Lancers struggled offensively down the stretch, making just two field goals over the final 10:27 of the game. A late triple from Irwin at the top of the key cut Spring Arbor's lead to 60-57 with 53 seconds left, but the Cougars' Rob Hogans clinched the game at the free throw line. Hogans finished with a game-high 22 points.

Overall for the game, Grace was outrebounded by eight and made 35 percent of their shots. The Lancers hit 7-of-23 (30 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Greg Miller produced 15 points and 11 rebounds in defeat, and Logan Irwin buried 4-of-7 from the 3-point line for 15 points, 5 assists, 2 steals and 0 turnovers. Niko Read added nine points, and Brandon Vanderhegghen tallied six points.

The Lancers will look to upset league leader No. 14 St. Francis in Fort Wayne on Saturday. Grace's women's team will play first in a doubleheader at St. Francis with the men's game to tip off at approximately 3 p.m.
