GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grace's volleyball team lost twice against nationally recognized competition on Friday at the Davenport Tournament.
The Lady Lancers (18-7) fell to No. 7 Viterbo in straight sets in the opener before losing 3-1 to Trinity Christian, who is receiving votes in the NAIA poll.
Despite eight block points in the opener, Grace's defense could not slow down the high-powered offense of No. 7 Viterbo. Grace struggled with just six kills in the first set in a 25-18 defeat. The final two sets were hard-fought with the Lady Lancers ultimately losing 25-21 and 25-22.
Hannah Clemmons led all players with 17 digs, and Kaitlin Kerrigan had a team-high seven kills. Ellie Harp produced 23 assists, 5 kills and 5 digs, Tori Bontrager and Sierra Smith had five kills, and Annie Salazar tallied 11 digs.
In the second match of the day, Grace's attack was stifled by the defense of Trinity Christian. The Lady Lancers were held to a -.014 hitting percentage in the 3-1 defeat.
Grace had four kills and 11 errors in the opening set, falling 25-11. After a 25-20 loss in the second set, Grace recovered to win 25-18 in the third. But Grace's defense was stifled into just six kills in the fourth set in a 25-13 defeat.
Grace Woolsey led the Lady Lancers with 10 kills on a .217 percentage, and Calah Kruse added five kills and 13 digs. Kerrigan had seven kills and 11 digs, Harp finished with 28 assists and three service aces, and Clemmons tallied 10 digs.
The Lady Lancers will continue the tournament on Saturday with matches against St. Xavier at 10 a.m. and No. 23 Ashford at 2 p.m. Â
