SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Six goals were scored in Grace's men's soccer match with Spring Arbor on Wednesday night. The Cougars came away the winners with a final score of 4-2.
"I'm disappointed with the result tonight. Even though we had to move guys around, we still had opportunities to get a good result on the road. But we failed to do that," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "As we grow in toughness, we will see the results shift in our favor."
The Lancers (6-4-1, 1-2-1 CL) fell behind early in the third minute when Spring Arbor scored off a defensive mistake. Within 20 minutes of action, the Cougars (9-1-3, 2-0-2 CL) had doubled their lead.
In the 23rd minute, Grace cut Spring Arbor's lead in half with an own goal. The hosts maintained a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.
Spring Arbor found its third goal of the match at the 55:07 mark, converting a corner kick. Grace again responded to cut the margin to one. Kyle Hamlin finished off an assist from Jon Christensen in the 70th minute, but Grace's momentum could carry the team no further.
With five minutes left in the contest, the Cougars found an insurance goal for the final margin of victory.
Overall in the match, Grace was outshot 16-14. Hamlin, Austin Altimus and Trent Smith had three shots apiece for the Lancers, and Hector Torres and Gift Sibukome finished with two shots.
Grace will have a chance to bounce back on Saturday with a road match at Mt. Vernon Nazarene at 4 p.m.
