Women's Basketball battles IPFW on the road

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Grace's women's basketball traveled to NCAA Div. I IPFW on Tuesday for an early-day exhibition.

IPFW eased away for the final score of 90-51 in a game which counted for the Mastodons but was an exhibition for the Lady Lancers.

Grace got off to a slow start offensively, tallying five points in the first 11 minutes. Defensively, Grace was plagued by foul trouble as IPFW got into the double bonus less than eight minutes into the contest.

The Mastodons quickly opened up a 30-5 lead before the Lady Lancers regained composure.

Kelsie Peterson scored Grace's first five points, and Kelsey Sule came off the bench to provide an offensive spark. Sule drained consecutive 3-pointers on Grace's final two possessions of the half -- the last of which came from a few feet beyond the arc -- to trim IPFW's lead down to 18 at the break. Sule led Grace with 10 points at the break on 3-of-3 shooting from the 3-point line.

The Mastodons made 52 percent of their shot attempts from the floor before halftime, including 6-of-11 from the 3-point line.

Grace started the second half slowly again, yielding a 10-0 run over the first 2:30 after halftime. Allison Kauffman picked up the scoring slack shortly after, ripping off nine points in a six-minute span.

The Mastodons scored nine unanswered points with seven minutes to go, expanding their cushion to over 30 and coasting to victory.

In the second half, Grace forced IPFW into eight turnovers. The Mastodons made 54 percent of their shots for the game and held a dominant 36-8 advantage in points in the paint. Grace hit 30 percent of their shots and committed 17 turnovers.

Kelsey Sule led Grace in scoring with 13 points on four 3-pointers, and Kelsie Peterson had 12 points, 3 steals and 3 rebounds. Allison Kauffman scored nine of her 11 points in the second half to go along with five boards, and Lindsey Schaefer added three points and three rebounds.

The Lady Lancers' next action is the annual Bennigan's Terry Polston Hoops for Hope on Friday and Saturday at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center. Grace will host Judson on Friday 6 p.m. followed by a matchup with No. 12 Cardinal Stritch on Saturday 2 p.m.
