Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Shooting woes doom Women’s Basketball at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. – A poor shooting night hampered Grace's women's basketball team in the Crossroads League opener on Tuesday night.

The Lady Lancers (6-4, 0-1 CL) shot 17-of-52 from the floor in a 56-52 defeat at the hands of the Trojans (4-3, 1-0 CL).

Grace was in front for nearly the entire first half, holding a 25-20 lead with 4:42 remaining. But Taylor swung momentum back on its side with a 10-0 run to close out the half, going on top 30-25 entering halftime.

The Trojans did not relinquish their advantage in the second half, although their lead was never greater than eight points. Despite trailing by one possession for the majority of the final 9:00 of the game, Grace was never able to regain the lead.

Grace's best chance late in the game came with less than two minutes on the clock. A pair of free throws from Tiffany Petro trimmed the Trojans' lead to 52-50 with 1:47 on the clock. Allison Kauffman then blocked Taylor's shot on the next possession, but Grace missed two layups in a row on offense that would have tied the game.

Grace came up another defensive stop on the next play, but the Lady Lancers' offensive trip resulted in a turnover. Taylor went on to add a layup and two free throws down the stretch to hold on for victory.

The Lady Lancers' defense held the Trojans to 36 percent shooting in the game. Grace had twice as many turnovers as Taylor (16-8), and over one-third of Taylor's points (20) came off Grace's turnovers.

Petro had a career night for Grace, tallying a personal-best 15 points in 16 minutes of action by making 6-of-8 from the floor. Kauffman's 19 points and 13 rebounds led all players, Kelsie Peterson had nine points and five rebounds, and Gabby Bryant tallied seven rebounds and three assists.

Grace will resume action next week with a pair of home games after Thanksgiving break. The Lady Lancers host No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan on Dec. 3 and Goshen on Dec. 6 at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
