Volleyball dismantles Spring Arbor in four sets

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Grace's volleyball team continued its sizzling start to 2014 with a 3-1 victory at Spring Arbor on Friday.

The Lady Lancers (12-3; 3-0 Crossroads League) had nine more kills and five more block points than Spring Arbor, holding the Cougars (1-11; 0-3 CL) to a .080 hitting percentage in the match.

Grace started the match red-hot with a 25-18 win, blasting the Cougars for 16 kills in the opening set on a .306 percentage. Spring Arbor got revenge in the second set, holding off a late Grace charge for a nervy 25-23 victory.

In the third set, Grace used a late 7-1 spurt to gain separation from the host school. Calah Kruse had two kills, and Tori Bontrager added a kill and an ace during Grace's run en route to a 25-20 victory.

Errors plagued the Cougars in the fourth set. Spring Arbor committed 12 errors as Grace's defense held the Cougars to a -.161 hitting percentage in a 25-16 win. The set was in the balance with Grace holding a slight 17-15 lead, but the Lady Lancers finished the game with an 8-1 run. Alix Underwood's kill gave Grace the final point to maintain Grace's perfect record in the Crossroads League.

Calah Kruse had the only double-double of the match. She finished with a match-best 14 kills, 15 digs and 4 block assists.

Tori Bontrager was instrumental off the bench with eight kills on a .438 percentage and eight block assists. Grace Woolsey racked up 11 kills on a .333 percentage with four block assists, and Ellie Harp tallied 39 assists, 8 kills and 7 digs.

Kaitlin Kerrigan chipped in seven kills, Megan Johnson had four block assists, and Annie Salazar and Hannah Clemmons each totaled 11 digs.
