WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Spring Arbor got the better of Grace's women's tennis team on Saturday, sweeping the Lady Lancers at Miller Field.
Several of Grace's players lost their first singles' matches of the season, including No. 1 Natalia Kurkova, No. 5 Gabrielle Lawrence and No. 6 Katie Etter. Kurkova dropped the first set 3-6 but recovered to force a tiebreaker with a 6-1 win. In the super tiebreaker, the Cougars came out on top 14-12 in a thriller.
In doubles' play, Kurkova teamed up with Kristin Cassidy to fall 8-4. Lawrence and Mariah Zumbrun also fell 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
"Although we were beat today, I don't think the scores truly represented how we played. I thought each girl was better than our last match against Taylor," said Grace head coach Scott Moore. "Natalia especially got things going in the second set before losing against a tough opponent. SAU is a very good team and well-coached. They got the best of us today."
