Box Score Goshen, Ind. - The game started at a break-neck pace, as both teams opted to jolt up and down the floor.
Both teams struggled to find a rhythm throughout most of the first half, as evidenced by the shooting percentages by both teams; each shot the ball at about 38% from the field.
The defensive intensity by each team was consistent throughout much of the first half. Neither team managed to protect the ball, as each team coughed the ball up 11 times in the first half alone.
Despite these nuisances, the Lady Lancers (13-11, 6-6 Crossroads League) managed to fight and claw their way to a four point lead at the half. This can be attributed in part to the disparity at the free throw line. Grace had the opportunity to shoot 12 free throws, connecting on all attempts from the stripe; while Goshen (16-8, 7-5 Crossroads League) only had five free throw attempts.
The teams returned from the locker rooms for the start of the second half; each making the adjustment of cutting down on turnovers, mainly by opting to play a methodical pace. The style of play shifted from shooting volume, to efficiency, allowing for a smaller margin for error.
With less than a minute remaining,
Kelsie Peterson was able to force a turnover that lead to free throws on the other end of the court. Peterson was able to connect on only one of her two attempts, extending the Lancers lead to two points. Goshen called a timeout following the free throw attempts by Peterson.
Coming out of the timeout, Goshen was able to get a good look and knocked down the game-tying shot with only 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Following a Grace timeout,
JoElen Fickell answered the call by knocking down a jumper to give the Lady Lancers the go-ahead bucket. Goshen inbounded the ball, rushed it up the floor, and drove towards the lane uncontrollably to be called for a charge. From there the Lady Lancers were able to secure a 72-70 victory with a simple inbounds pass.
Grace will hope to build on this victory when they visit Spring Arbor, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
