WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Almost exactly one year later, Grace found revenge against Oakland City on Tuesday night.
A year after Oakland City eliminated Grace from the NCCAA Regionals on penalty kicks, the Lancers returned the favor to the Mighty Oaks with a 3-1 win in the semifinals at Miller Athletic Complex.
The Lancers (13-6-2) will host the regional finals on Saturday against the winner of Roberts Wesleyan and Lancaster Bible. Saturday's game will kick off at 5 p.m.
The win also ties Grace for the most victories as a team since 1983.
Tuesday's game started cautiously. The teams began slowly as they adjusted to the constant downpour of rain in the first half.
One of the best early chances of the half fell to Kyle Hamlin. He got space on the left side of the box and fired off a hard, low drive that whisked just wide of goal.
With 10 minutes left in the half, Oakland City had a free kick at the top of the penalty box. Robbie Barnhill made a terrific diving save to his left to deny the Mighty Oaks (7-10-1) from scoring.
The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute. A nice build-up resulted in Thomas Tydeman playing a pass in the box to Hamlin, and the senior curled in his shot on the first touch around the goalkeeper at the 42:58 mark.
In the 60th minute, Grace doubled its advantage. Grace won possession in its attacking third of the field, and Weni took aim from long range. His 22-yard blast soared just beneath the crossbar to make the score 2-0.
The Mighty Oaks pulled a goal back with 19 minutes remaining when a long shot skipped on the wet surface over Barnhill.
Grace responded by applying offensive pressure, eventually finding a third goal. Colin Cape took aim from 24 yards away, and his bent effort fooled Oakland City's goalkeeper with eight minutes to play.
The match ended without a significant threat over the final eight minutes from Oakland City. Grace won the shooting battle 17-13 for the match. Cape and Hamlin had four shots apiece, and Damon Binkley and Daniel Smith each fired two.
Barnhill made nine saves in a strong performance in goal.
