UPLAND, Ind. – Grace's softball team kicked off the Crossroads League season with a pair of losses at Taylor on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (7-8, 0-2 CL) fell 4-0 in the opener before losing 7-4 in the second half of the twin bill.
Grace could only muster one hit off the pitching of Hannah Robbins in the first game. Morgan Hutcheston had the only hit in 22 at-bats for the Lady Lancers.
Amanda Bowman tossed four innings with the start and allowed two runs with four strikeouts, but the Trojans pushed across two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the victory.
In the second game, Taylor jumped out to another 4-0 lead after two innings. But Grace's bats sparked to life midway through the contest.
Grace tallied a single run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to pull within 6-4. Chandler Elliott drove in a pair of runs in Grace's three-run fifth.
The Trojans tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, and the Lady Lancers were unable to mount a rally in response.
Brooke Shell batted 2-for-4 with a triple and a solo home run as a one-person offensive machine. Elliott was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, and Hannah Herbster finished 1-for-3.
Grace was credited with four errors in the field and allowed seven extra-base hits to the Trojans (8-6, 2-0 CL).
The Lady Lancers have two more series this week – both on the road. Grace plays at St. Francis on Friday and at Goshen on Saturday, weather permitting.Â
