CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lady Lancers' softball team continued its Florida trip with a pair of games against Judson and Bellevue.
Grace opened the day with a narrow 2-1 loss to Judson before rallying to run-rule Bellevue 9-1. Bellevue is in the "receiving votes" section of the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning the 26th-most votes in the nation.
The Lady Lancers (5-4) jumped out to a strong lead on Bellevue in the bottom of the first. Grace scored five runs in the opening inning. Clarissa Knight drove in the first run with an RBI triple, and Chandler Elliott doubled Knight in on the next at-bat. Brittany Melzoni tripled in a run with two outs in the inning, and Kati Gregory and Hannah Herbster also drove in runs.
Brooke Shell led off the second inning with a triple, and Elliott drove her in with a ground ball. Ashley Kleinbub had a two-out RBI double on the next-bat.
Morgan Hutcheson and Knight drove in two more runs in the third as Grace built up an insurmountable 9-0 lead. Bellevue blasted a solo home run in the fourth, but the Bruins were unable to push any other runs across to end the game after five innings due to the run rule.
Shell was 2-for-3 with two runs and a triple, and Knight was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Herbster plated twice, and Elliott drove in two runs. Elliott also tossed a complete game from the mound. She held Bellevue to six hits and one run in a strong effort.
In the opening game of the day, Grace fell in the final inning to Judson and lost 2-1. Grace led for nearly the entire contest after scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning.
Shell doubled to the outfield to score Chelsea Whitesell. The Lady Lancers still had two runners in scoring position in the inning but could not tack on an insurance run.
The Eagles made Grace pay in bottom of the sixth. Judson tallied the game-tying and go-ahead runs off the bat of Ashley Quinlan, and the Lady Lancers were unable to rally in the seventh.
Amanda Bowman pitching four shutout innings from the mound after getting the start. She struck out three batters. Shell and Elliot each notched two hits. Grace outhit Judson 6-5 in the game.
