CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Grace's men's soccer team lost a 3-0 match on Saturday at Campbellsville, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25.
The Lancers (0-2), playing without two starting midfielders, still managed to produce 11 shots against the Tigers (1-0). But Campbellsville's finishing proved too much.
The Tigers unleashed an onslaught of shot attempts in the first half, outshooting the Lancers 16-4 before halftime. Campbellsville broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, scoring on a rebound for the only goal of the first half.
Robbie Barnhill made four saves in the opening half to keep Grace in contention, and he would be called upon to stop even more in the second half.
The second half balanced out in terms of shots with Campbellsville holding a slight 10-7 advantage after halftime. But the Tigers had eight of their 10 shots on goal, scoring twice in a six-minute span to ease away for the win. Campbellsville scored its second goal of the match in the 72nd minute, and they added the third goal at the 77:58 mark.
Barnhill recorded 10 saves overall in the match. The Lancers had 11 shots, and seven of those attempts were on goal. Dominic Harris led Grace's offense with three shots and two on goal, and Thomas Tydeman and Nikola Djordjevic attempted two shots apiece.
"We tried a lot of new players in different positions, and we are still figuring out what we are capable of," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "We are also learning about how challenging these games can be. Campbellsville is a very good team, and they clearly outplayed us today."
The Lancers will travel down to Bluefield, Va., for a pair of games next week. Grace will play Bluefield on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before facing William Peace on Thursday at 4 p.m.
