Men’s Soccer suffers OT defeat

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Grace's four-game winning streak was snapped in overtime on Saturday.

The Lancers (4-3) fell 2-1 on a golden-goal winner from Roosevelt to close out the Spring Arbor Invitational.

Grace got on the scoreboard first with a flurry of early activity. Kyle Hamlin and Damon Binkley both had shots on goal that were saved within the opening minutes, and Thomas Tydeman broke onto the scoreboard. He beat the goalkeeper from the Lakers (2-3-1) in the seventh minute.

The rest of the half played evenly with Grace taking seven shots and Roosevelt eight shots. Robbie Barnhill came up big in goal for Grace, making six saves in the first period to keep the Lancers ahead 1-0 entering halftime.

Roosevelt increased its attack in the second half, outshooting Grace 10-3 and eventually found the game-tying goal in the 70th minute. Nine minutes prior, Grace nearly scored its second goal of the match, but Nakilee Weni's shot deflected off the post. Mitchell Zeilenga and Tydeman also had shots in the second half, but Grace was unable to find a winner in regulation.

Damon Binkley tried a shot 30 seconds into the overtime period, but his effort went wide. The next shot of the match nine minutes later proved to be the last. The Cougars ended the game with a goal off a corner kick in the 100th minute.

The Lakers took 19 shot attempts and 12 shots on goal, while Grace was credited for 11 shots. The match also saw 32 fouls called and five yellow cards issued.

"Our guys worked very hard today. That was a good team with tremendous technical ability and creative, flowing movement. We had some great opportunities in the second half and didn't convert," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "Losing in overtime always seems harder than losing in regulation, but we will move on to our next match. We can learn a lot from this game. I love this group of men, and they continue to impress me with how they bounce back and learn from every game – win or lose."

The Lancers wrap up their nonleague schedule on Sept. 19 with a trip to Chicago to face Moody Bible.
