Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Lancers held at IWU in 2OT

MARION, Ind. – Despite a dominant offensive advantage, No. 7 Grace's women's soccer team had to settle for a draw on Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan.

The Lady Lancers (8-0-1, 0-0-1 Crossroads League) doubled up IWU in shot attempts and had eight more corner kicks, but the Wildcats (3-5-1, 0-0-1 CL) held Grace to a 1-1 scoreline.

The Wildcats shocked the Lady Lancers 75 seconds into the match. A long shot from outside the penalty box skimmed down off the crossbar and across the goal line for a quick opening goal.

Grace's response was swift. Mallory Rondeau's shot was blocked by the Wildcats' goalkeeper, but Jordan Hairgrove was there for a rebound putback at the 11:32 mark.

The remainder of the first half was a consistent assault on IWU's goal. Grace had nine shots before halftime, eight of which were on goal. But the teams entered halftime tied 1-1.

Grace continued to build on its advantage in possession during the second half, but the finishing touch continued to elude the visitors. The Lady Lancers had six shots and six corner kicks in the second half compared to three shots and zero corners from IWU.

The game headed to overtime where neither team could find the golden-goal winner. Rondeau had a shot in the first overtime session that hit the post, but the match would end 1-1.

"It's difficult to come away from such a high-caliber match from last week and enter into match conditions like today. There is a perfect storm of attributes that we have to overcome on a day like today, and we did not do that," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "The positive is that we are infinitely better than we showed today. To be successful, every day we have to demand that this level of 'possession attacking futbol' be kept. This will be our target."

Grace had a 17-8 shot advantage in the match and also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Rondeau took four shots to lead all players, and Heather Martin and Meghan Wiles had three shots apiece. Abby Schue made three saves in goal.

The Lady Lancers return to Miller Athletic Complex for a pair of home matches next week. Grace hosts St. Francis on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Huntington on Saturday.
