Volleyball goes 1-1 on final day of UNOH Tournament

 

LIMA, Ohio – Grace's volleyball team continued its strong run through the Northwestern Ohio Tournament by splitting the final day.

The Lady Lancers (8-5) tied for the best finish in the tournament after falling to Missouri Valley and sweeping Midway on Saturday.

The opening match of the day was tightly contested throughout against Missouri Valley. The first set was knotted 18-18 until Grace pulled ahead late. The Lady Lancers were serving for the set at 24-22, but the Vikings rallied with two kills and a block point to take the lead, and an attacking error by Grace gave Missouri Valley the 26-24 win.

The second set swung the Vikings' way late in the game again. Grace Woolsey tied the score at 23-23 with a kill, but two straight kills by the Vikings' Hanna Glastetter ended the set 25-23.

Grace found revenge in the third set, leading from start to finish in a five-point victory. But the Vikings (7-2) clinched the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set, capitalizing on seven of Grace's attacking errors to win.

Statistically, Grace had the advantage in nearly every category. The Lady Lancers had a higher hitting percentage (.231 to .206), more kills (54 to 53), more digs (54 to 53) and more blocks (10.5 to 6.5). Kelsee Zuidema notched a team-high 16 kills, and Kaitlin Kerrigan had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs.

Laken Chaney recorded 45 assists, 6 digs, 4 kills, 3 block assists and 2 service aces, and Woolsey had 6 kills, 1 solo block and 4 block assists. Sara Miller led all players with 19 digs, and Sierra Smith added seven kills and three block assists.

The final match of the tournament resulted in Grace's third sweep of the weekend. The Lady Lancers defeated Midway 25-14, 25-12 and 25-20.

Fifteen players saw action for Grace in the Midway match. Kari Feddema led all players with nine kills on a .467 percentage, and Woolsey added five kills and a career-high six aces. Taylor Baird made her first appearance of the season and handed out 14 assists with three digs, and Kerrigan tallied four kills and seven digs.

Annie Salazar recorded four service aces, and Megan Johnson chipped in three kills and five digs.

Overall Grace had 23 more kills than Midway while holding the Eagles (0-7) to a negative hitting percentage of -.097.

Sierra Smith was named to the All-Tournament Team after a strong four matches.

The Lady Lancers return to Crossroads League play next week, starting with a road match at No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
