MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - A career performance from senior Sarah Feasby went for naught in Grace's women's basketball team's defeat at Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Sunday.
Feasby scored a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds, but the Lady Lancers (5-15, 0-8 Crossroads League) fell 69-58.
Grace found itself in an early deficit on the road, trailing by 11 by the end of the first quarter 24-13.
The Cougars (10-10, 4-4 CL) built their advantage up to 16 in the second quarter. A late 3-pointer by Brooke Sugg cut Mt. Vernon's margin to 37-25 at the halftime mark.
In the third quarter, Feasby helped lead a comeback by Grace. She scored six points in the final minutes to bring Grace within five.
Mt. Vernon reasserted itself in the fourth quarter; the Cougars pulled ahead 57-45 with less than six minutes to play.
Grace had one final furious comeback remaining. Feasby hit two free throws, and Kelsie Peterson buried a 3-pointer in the corner. Sugg then made a steal at halfcourt and found Peterson for another triple to cut the Cougars' lead down to four at 57-53 with 4:20 on the clock.
But Grace's rally found its stopping point after Peterson's back-to-back 3's. The Cougars responded with a 12-0 run as Grace's offense produced four missed shots and three turnovers over its next six possessions.
As a team, Grace was strong defensively to force Mt. Vernon into 23 turnovers. The Lady Lancers also valued the basketball, committing just nine turnovers of their own.
But Mt. Vernon held Grace to 31 percent shooting, including 5-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Cougars also outrebounded Grace by 17 and made 48 percent of their field goals.
Feasby's 20 points came on 7-of-12 shooting, and Haley Richardson added 10 points and three assists.
Sugg buried a trio of 3-pointers and tallied 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals, Peterson finished with eight points and two steals, and Gabby Miller had four points and seven rebounds. Hannah Adams also chipped in five points in 10 minutes off the bench.
Next up, the Lady Lancers travel to Marian on Wednesday. Grace ends the week with a women's/men's doubleheader with Bethel at the MOCC on Saturday.
