Lancers earn gritty win at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team picked up a hard-fought 80-70 victory at Huntington on Tuesday.

The Lancers, winners of five of their past six, outrebounded Huntington by 10 and scored 36 points in the paint.

Grace improves to 13-4 and 3-2 in the Crossroads League, sitting one game out of first place in the CL standings.

Brandon Vanderhegghen led all players with season-highs of 27 points and 10 rebounds, and Logan Irwin added 20 points, 8 assists and 0 turnovers.

Grace began Tuesday's game with a 3-pointer from Irwin on the first possession, and the Lancers led for much of the opening half.

The Foresters (8-9, 2-3 CL) managed to pull out a five-point lead with 2:33 left, but Vanderhegghen led a furious rally to help Grace to a 36-35 halftime lead. Vanderhegghen scored Grace's final 10 points of the half, including seven in the final 2:16.

Shortly into the second half, Grace pulled away from the Foresters for good. The Lancers ripped off 12 unanswered points over a four-minute span to go on top by 11. Kyle Fillman scored six of his 10 points during Grace's run.

The Lancers never led by fewer than seven points for the rest of the half and led by as many as 15. Grace secured the victory at the foul line, making 10 free throws over the final 1:29.

Grace won the rebounding battle 51-41 after grabbing 14 offensive boards. The Lancers also held Huntington to 38 percent shooting, including 5-of-23 from the 3-point line.

Erik Bowen produced 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, and Fillman just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.

Freshman Logan Godfrey had the best game of his young career, making 3-of-5 from the floor for 8 points, 4 boards and 2 blocked shots. Caleb Featherston chipped in eight rebounds and three assists.

The Lancers gear up for a high-profile matchup at Indiana Wesleyan — the No. 1-ranked team in the nation — on Saturday at 3 p.m.
