Turnovers prove costly for Lady Lancers against IWU

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's women's basketball team was unable to limit turnovers on Saturday, and No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan took advantage on their way to a 65-47 win.

The defense for the Wildcats (15-3, 4-2 Crossroads League) forced Grace into committing 19 turnovers, allowing the Wildcats to capitalize on easy chances in the paint. The Wildcats had their way inside, penetrating the holes in the Lady Lancers' defense.

The first quarter of action was back and forth with several lead changes. Haley Richardson caught fire off the bench with eight points for the Lady Lancers (5-13, 0-6 CL). IWU's Kelsey Key answered back with 11 points of her own for the Wildcats. The quarter ended with a 16-15 lead for IWU.

The Wildcats began to create a gap in the second quarter behind sharpshooting from Tori Kraft. Kraft made three 3-pointers to help IWU gain momentum. Grace went into halftime trailing by nine, 37-28.

IWU never trailed again as Grace struggled to fight its way back. The Wildcats extended their advantage to 19 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lancers held IWU to eight points in the fourth quarter after implementing a fullcourt defense, but Grace was only able to produce nine points itself in a comeback attempt.

IWU's offense found the cracks inside Grace's defense and finished the game with 36 points in the paint. The Wildcats hit 50 percent from the floor, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Lancers were unable to gain any momentum in the second half due to a poor 25-percent shooting effort. Grace struggled to make 21 percent from behind the 3-point line (3-of-14) for the game.

Sarah Feasby finished one rebound shy of a double-double, leading Grace with 15 points. Feasby also led both teams in the rebound column.

Haley Richardson contributed 10 points off the bench, and Kelsie Peterson added eight points and seven boards.

The Lady Lancers, searching for their first league win, will host Goshen on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The women's game will be the first game in a men's and women's doubleheader at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
