WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Grace College women's soccer team snapped No. 1 Spring Arbor's 32-match win streak in an intense match at 1st Source Bank Field on Saturday night.
The teams battled to a 0-0 draw after two overtimes, ending a long winning streak by the Cougars dating back to Sept. 12, 2015.
"Spring Arbor is a quality side. They have been very good and are deservedly the number one team in the nation. They're very organized, composed and relentless in work rate and attack. They are a force of futbol," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "I was very pleased with our women today. They executed our strategy well. We were very resilient and structured which did not expose us more than just a few times. It also meant that we created several good opportunities and got some decent sniffs at the Spring Arbor goal. At key moments we were very intelligent and that made a difference today."
The first half was tightly contested as both teams brought a lot of energy to start off the game. Grace's defense bent but didn't break against Spring Arbor's heavy attack.
Spring Arbor (13-0-1, 6-0-1 Crossroads League), the reigning NAIA national champions, totaled nine shots and five on goal in the first half. In the 19th minute, a free kick from Bethany Balcer bounced off the post and almost scored the first goal of the game. Abby Schue recorded five saves in the first half for the Lady Lancers (4-6-3, 3-2-2 CL).
The Lancers attempted to catch Spring Arbor napping at the start of the match. Meredith Hollar dribbled the ball through the defense after the opening kickoff to give Grace their first shot of the game within the first few seconds.
A free kick produced another strong look for the Lady Lancers. Kristen Bellinger's kick headed towards the upper corner of the goal, but the Cougars' goalkeeper swatted the ball away at the last moment to keep the game scoreless.
The second half contained similar action to the first. The action was physical and action-packed, despite neither side being able to score.
The Cougars had a good chance to score the first goal of the game with six minutes left in regulation. Balcer had two attempts inside the penalty box. The first shot was blocked, and the second was scooped up by Schue.
Grace's offense seemed to show more life in the second half as they tried to take advantage of the fatigued Spring Arbor back line. Grace totaled seven shots in the second half after tallying four in the first.
The game headed to overtime with the scoreboard knotted at 0-0.
Spring Arbor had the better of chances in the first overtime session, limiting Grace to just one attempt.
Grace had the stronger chances in the second overtime period. Perhaps the best look of overtime came with one minute left on the clock. Hannah Miller muscled through a pair of Cougar defenders to latch onto a loose ball, but her shot from the top of the penalty box went high.
The physical match included 42 fouls and three yellow cards. Spring Arbor recorded a 25-14 advantage in shots.
Abby Schue made several key stops and 13 saves overall in 110 minutes against the defending NAIA champions. The back line of Kristelle Jadoo, Carlie Salinas, McKenna Cruz, Aubrey Feipel and Clair Snodgrass defended Schue well.
"Most of all I'm proud of our women for putting together a compete match. This has taken discipline and focus," Voss continued. "They chose to progress, and it has taken our futboling ability to a good place. I'm excited about us!"
Grace will look to keep its improved form going into Wednesday when the Lady Lancers welcome Mt. Vernon Nazarene to 1st Source Bank Field.
