Men’s Soccer loses in regular season finale

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The last game of the 2016 regular season ended in defeat for Grace's men's soccer team.

The Lancers outshot the Maple Leafs by 10 in the match on Saturday, but a lone first-half goal gave Goshen a 1-0 win at 1st Source Bank Field. The loss officially eliminates Grace from the Crossroads League Tournament.

In the first half, Grace trailed on the scoreboard despite outshooting the opposition. The Lancers (7-7-3, 2-6-1 CL) outshot the Maple Leafs 7-3 also surrendered the game winner.

Grace had dangerous possession in several instances in the first half. The Lancers earned four corner kicks and moved the ball inside their attacking penalty box on a few occasions.

But Goshen struck first in the 26th minute. The Maple Leafs (6-6-5, 4-3-2 CL) found life on the right side of the field and took three shots in rapid succession. Grace goalkeeper Robbie Barnhill came up big with two saves on good chances, but the rebound from the second shot fell to the feet of a Maple Leaf player, and Calvin Magunda made good on his chance to give Goshen a 1-0 lead.

Grace's best look in the first half came on a quick attack. Cody Boerema cut in from the right side of the field and tried a low drive to the far post, but his shot went wide.

Boerema created another chance with a brilliant, winding run. He split several defenders and laid the ball off to Daniel Smith, but Smith's long shot was high.

The half ended 1-0 in Goshen's favor on a chilly autumn evening.

The second half started slowly. Grace did not have a threatening moment until 15 minutes into the period. Dominic Harris got the edge on his defender inside the box, and tried a low shot from a tight angle which was saved.

Harris's shot seemed to give Grace life. The Lancers' pressure ramped up and produced several more chances. Breno Oliveira tried two shots that both went high, and Cody Boerema's 21-yard free kick sailed high of the crossbar.

Harris provided another opportunity with 16 minutes remaining. Michael Challinor jumpstarted an attack for Grace, and he passed to Colin Cape. Cape made a nifty leading pass to Harris in the box, but Harris's shot was again denied.

While Grace continued to set up camp in Goshen's half of the field in the second half, the Maple Leafs refused to surrender a goal.

With seven minutes on the clock, Grace earned a free kick at the top edge of the penalty box. Cape lined up a shot, but his laser was saved by an acrobatic dive.

Grace had two more chances on set pieces. A free kick resulted in a header from Jon Sands, but his shot was punched above the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball went to the far side of the box, but Damon Binkley's shot went wide.

The match ended with Grace holding a 17-7 advantage in shots and 7-0 advantage in corners. Goshen could only muster two shots, although one hit the goalpost.

Saturday's game was also Senior Day to honor the graduating class of Sands, Barnhill, Harris, Mitchell Zeilenga and Jon Christensen.
