WINONA LAKE, Ind. - A strong opening set went to waste as Grace's volleyball team lost in four games to Taylor on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers generated little on offense after the first set at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
In the opening set, Taylor got out to a fast start with a 7-1 lead to force Grace to burn an early timeout. The timeout worked as Grace climbed back to within one at 11-10.
The score stayed close as an ace from Grace Woolsey tied up the game at 21-21. From there, Grace used two straight kills from Kelsee Zuidema to lock up a 25-23 win in the opener.
The second set was a direct opposite to the first. Grace jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and the Trojans had to call an early timeout.
Taylor eventually tied the score at 11-11 and used that momentum to build up a lead. The Lady Lancers could not find a way to slow down Taylor down the stretch as the Trojans rolled to a seven-point win.
The Trojans' energy continued in the third set as they stayed in front for the duration. Grace's attack produced nearly as many errors (8) as kills in the game, allowing Taylor to cruise to a 25-11 victory.
The fourth and decisive set again saw Grace struggle on offense. Grace hit at a .000 percentage to fall behind, and the Lady Lancers never caught up to the Trojans.Â
The Lady Lancers made overtures of a dramatic comeback with their final stand, holding off three straight match points. But a Trojan kill eventually ended the match at 25-19.
Grace's offense was responsible for 32 attacking errors. The hosts hit at a .070 percentage for the match, while Taylor enjoyed 50 kills at a .209 clip.
Zuidema had a career night in defeat. She racked up a personal-best 23 kills to lead all players to go along with 13 digs and two aces.
Marta Bleed was next in line for Grace in kills with seven. and Kari Feddema had five kills and seven digs.
Taylor Baird had a double-double with 31 assists, 13 digs and 4 kills, and Caylie Teel produced a team-high 22 digs.
The Lady Lancers end the regular season with two away matches. Grace plays at Huntington on Friday 7 p.m. and at Marian on Saturday at 5 p.m.
