Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

IWU knocks out Lady Lancers from CL Tourney

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - For the third time in the past four games, Grace's women's soccer team was shut out.

Indiana Wesleyan blanked the Lady Lancers 1-0 at 1st Source Bank Field, knocking Grace out of the Crossroads League Tournament in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Although Grace's offense threatened often in the second half, the Lady Lancers (5-7-4) were held to five shots in the match.

Grace's offense struggled to connect throughout much of the first half. The Lady Lancers had two corner kicks but could only muster one shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes.

IWU's offense produced a goal in the early stages to put the pressure on Grace. The Wildcats converted a scrum in the penalty box after Grace failed to clear a loose ball.

The best chance for Grace's attack came in the final 10 minutes of the half. A corner kick fell to the feet of Kristen Bellinger at the top edge of the penalty box, but Bellinger's low drive whisked wide of the left post.

The Wildcats entered halftime with a 1-0 lead. IWU also led Grace in shots at 5-1.

In the second half, Grace's offense picked up momentum. The Lady Lancers had more urgency in pursuit of an equalizer.

With 28 minutes left, Hannah Miller won possession in Grace's end of the field. She crossed a ball into Liz Van Wormer on the left side of the field, and Van Wormer's long shot went high.

Two minutes later, Bellinger had another shot similar to her first. She found space at the top of the penalty box after a corner kick, but her shot was saved.

With 17 minutes left in the contest, Hollar nearly scored on a breakaway down the left side of the field. She created space along the endline to take a low shot, but IWU's goalkeeper made a nifty save from close range.

Grace continued to threaten in the closing minutes, but the Lady Lancers were repealed by the Wildcats' backline and the offside whistle. The Lady Lancers were called offside eight times in Saturday's match.

Hollar had two shots on goal to lead Grace, and Bellinger had two more. Grace was outshot 8-5 in the match, and the teams were even 3-3 in corner kicks.

Abby Schue made three saves in 90 minutes as Grace's goalkeeper.

The Lady Lancers will turn their attention to qualifying for the NCCAA National Championships and will await word on NCCAA Regionals.
