Softball opens season in Tennessee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 4

PULASKI, Tenn. - The ground in Winona Lake may have been covered in snow, but Grace's softball bats were plenty warm as they traveled south for the season-opening Martin Methodist Meltdown.

The Lady Lancers erupted for 32 runs over four games in the tournament.

On Friday, Grace smashed Madonna 14-6 in the opener thanks to two grand slams before falling in walkoff fashion to the hosts Martin Methodist.

On Saturday, the Lady Lancers plated 12 runs but gave up 13 against Indiana Tech. No. 15 Davenport finally quieted Grace's bats in a 9-0 win to wrap up the tourney.

In the opening game on Friday, Grace scored in every inning but one in a rout against Madonna. The Lady Lancers surrendered three runs in the top of the first inning, but Grace responded with four runs of its own in the bottom half.

In the second inning, Grace took charge. The first three batters reached base safely, and Clarissa Knight brought them all home with a grand slam to center field. Grace quickly reloaded the bases with one out, and Brittany Melzoni launched the second grand slam of the inning to left field to wrap up an eight-run inning.

Knight finished 3-of-4 with three runs and four RBIs, and Hannah Herbster was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Ashley Kleinbub and Kati Gregory each scored twice.

Hannah England earned the win in her first collegiate start, surrendering one earned run and four hits in four innings.

Against Martin Methodist, the Lady Lancers were three outs away from going 2-0 on the day.

The score was tied 5-5 entering the final inning. Grace went ahead 6-5 in the top of the seventh when Kati Gregory produced a two-out single to score Knight.

But the RedHawks won the game in their final at-bats with a single and two doubles on the first three at-bats.

Knight again had the hot bat for Grace, going 3-for-3 with 4 runs, 2 triples and 1 stolen base. Chandler Elliott had two hits and two RBIs, and Hannah Herbster was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

England came in as relief to toss the final four innings, giving up five hits.

On Saturday, an offensive showcase went Indiana Tech's way in a 13-12 victory. The team's traded turns making runs.

Grace plated five runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 11-9, but the Warriors responded with three runs of their own to lead by one.

The Lady Lancers tied the game in the top of the fifth, but Indiana Tech scored the eventual game winner in the bottom of the inning.

No. 15 Davenport eased by Grace in the final game of the tournament, and the Panthers won 9-0.

The Lady Lancers will take two weeks off before heading to Clermont, Fla., for their Spring Break trip. Grace will play three ranked teams in Florida, including No. 16 Southeastern, No. 15 Davenport and No. 10 St. Xavier.
