Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lancers win at Marian, move into fourth place

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team jumped back into fourth place in the Crossroads League with a 68-56 win at Marian on Tuesday.

The Lancers (19-10, 9-8 CL) won the rebounding battle by 16 and held Marian to 35 percent shooting in a defensive-minded clash.

The win, combined with Goshen's loss, moves Grace into a tie with the Maple Leafs for fourth place in the league. Grace currently owns the tiebreaker with Goshen, meaning the Lancers will clinch a first-round game at home in the CL Tournament with a win on Saturday. Grace ends the regular season at home on Saturday 4 p.m. against Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

The first half was sloppy as both teams struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive end. The teams combined for 14 turnovers before halftime.

The Knights scored the first points of the game and held a slight 14-10 lead after nine minutes of action.

Grace's defense stifled Marian for the rest of the half. The Knights could only produce eight more points over the final 11:33 of the half.

Tre Olive helped spark Grace's attack, outscoring Marian by himself over the last 11 minutes with nine points of his own. The Lancers closed the half on a 21-8 run and led 31-22 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lancers hoped to pull away with a 14-point edge. A jumper from Erik Bowen gave Grace a comfortable 48-34 advantage with 11:54 to play.

The Knights climbed back with an 11-3 run. Marian eventually cut Grace's lead down to four at 53-49 with 4:00 on the clock.

A much-needed jump shot from Kyle Fillman stopped Marian's surge, and Grace benefitted with two free throws seconds later after a technical foul was called on the Knights.

Down the stretch, the Lancers used the free throw line to their advantage as Marian was forced to foul. Grace made nine foul shots over the last 1:25 to ease away for a 12-point final margin of victory.

Brandon Vanderhegghen led Grace in scoring with 18 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the free throw line.

Bowen finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots for his 17th double-double of the season.

Olive had 14 points and eight boards, and Logan Irwin tallied nine points and two steals.

Grace did not shoot particularly well as a team (37 percent), but the Lancers held the Knights to 35 percent shooting from the floor, including 3-of-13 from the 3-point line.

Grace outrebounded Marian 47-31 for the game, and the Lancers also attempted 17 more free throws than the Knights.

The Lancers' regular-season finale on Saturday with Mt. Vernon Nazarene will be a women's/men's doubleheader at the MOCC. Saturday will also be Senior Day to honor Grace's graduating class. Saturday is also Zimmer Biomet Day, allowing all employees and their immediate families free admission to the doubleheader.
