Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Lancers wrap up season with win

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's women's basketball team sent its seniors off in style with a 65-53 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday.

The Lady Lancers (8-22, 3-15 Crossroads League) ended their season with an upset of No. 3 Marian on Wednesday and a 12-point win over the Cougars (10-20, 4-14 CL) in the season finale at the MOCC.

Grace was fueled by its defense in the first half. While the Lady Lancers only shot 39 percent from the floor, Mt. Vernon connected on an even-lower 32 percent.

The Lady Lancers' defensive energy gave the Cougars fits, forcing Mt. Vernon into 14 turnovers before halftime. Grace led 15-9 after one quarter of play, scoring six points off turnovers.

The Cougars clawed back to a four-point deficit midway through the second quarter at 20-16. But six points from Sarah Feasby sparked a 9-0 run, helping the Lady Lancers cruise into halftime with a 32-20 advantage.

Feasby scored 12 points to lead all players at the half, and Kelsie Peterson added nine of her own. Kelsey Sule and Hannah Adams each added a 3-pointer off the bench for Grace.

Mt. Vernon began to find its offense after halftime, scoring 33 points over the final two quarters. The Cougars were unable to cut into Grace's cushion in the third quarter, however, and entered the final stanza facing a 12-point deficit.

In the fourth quarter, Mt. Vernon made a push with an 8-0 run. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Sierra Basista cut Grace's lead down to 50-43 with 6:52 left to play.

But Grace's defense, fittingly enough, turned the tide. Grace converted steals and fastbreak layups on consecutive possessions — the first on a euro step from Brooke Sugg and the second was an and-1 from Peterson, enlivening the MOCC crowd.

Incredibly, 13 of Grace's final 15 points came off Cougars' turnovers, and Grace cruised to its 12-point win.

For the game, Grace forced the Cougars into 25 turnovers. The Lady Lancers nabbed 17 steals, including four by Peterson and three apiece from Feasby, Haley Richardson and Sugg.

Feasby led Grace in scoring in her last game with 16 points and five rebounds. Peterson finished with 13 points and two assists, and Richardson tallied 10 points and five boards.

Sugg scored nine points, and Miller chipped in six points and three assists.

Saturday's game ended the careers of seniors Gabby Miller, Jesse Feitz, Sarah Feasby and Kelsey Sule. The quartet reached three NCCAA National Championships and won two NCCAA Regional titles. During their careers, Grace also achieved its highest league finish (fourth) and best league record (12-6) ever in 2013-14.
