St. Francis/Grace split doubleheader

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Grace's softball team took 1-of-2 from St. Francis on the road on Saturday in Crossroads League play.

The Lady Lancers (8-10, 2-2 CL) won the opener 7-4 before losing in the second game 8-0. The Cougars (5-5, 1-1 CL) owned the second game, handcuffing Grace to just one hit and zero walks from the plate.

In the opener, Grace plated a run in four of the seven innings. Morgan Hutcheson scored off an RBI double by Kyleigh Garner in the top of the first.

The third inning produced three more runs for Grace. Hutcheson led off the inning with a single and a steal. Chandler Elliott then drove her in with a single. Later in the inning, Ashley Kleinbub singled in Elliott, and Sam Heim brought in Kleinbub with a two-out triple to right field.

Kleinbub drove in three more runs in the game. She doubled in the fifth to plate Garner, and she blasted a two-out, two-run home run to center field to give Grace insurance runs.

St. Francis made things interesting with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Allison Franklin came in as relief to earn to secure the final two outs of Grace's win.

Hannah England earned the win from the mound, giving up three earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. She struck out four batters. 

Kleinbub was the offensive star of the game, batting 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Garner and Elliott hit 2-for-3, and Hutcheson and Emily Bobb earned two hits apiece. Hutcheson scored three times and swiped two bases.

The Lady Lancers will have their home opener on Monday at 3:30 p.m. against Purdue North Central at Miller Athletic Complex.
