SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - Grace's softball team was unable to convert on its chances in a doubleheader loss at Spring Arbor on Friday.
The Lady Lancers (12-12, 4-4 Crossroads League) outhit Spring Arbor 15-11 overall in the twinbill, but Grace hurt its own cause with four errors on the day and lost 5-3 and 3-0.
In the opening game, Grace had a 10-5 advantage in hits but still lost by two.
The Cougars (17-9, 8-0 CL) burst ahead 4-0 after two innings, needing just two hits to plate those four runs.
Grace showed signs of life with a three-run third inning. Clarissa Knight drove in two runs with a triple, and Ashley Kleinbub brought in Knight with a two-out RBI single.
The Lady Lancers had baserunners in each of the next three innings — including first and third base with one out in the sixth — but Grace was unable to capitalize with runs.
Spring Arbor increased its lead to 5-3 with another run in the bottom of the sixth, but Grace had plans for a rally in the top of the seventh.
After Grace's first two batters grounded out, Grace proceeded to load the bases with a hit batsman, a walk and a clutch single from Kleinbub. But the Lady Lancers stranded all three runners with a ground ball on their final at-bat.
Overall, Grace left nine runners on base in the game and committed three errors in the field.
Knight hit 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, Kyleigh Garner hit 2-for-3, and Kleinbub and Hannah Herbster also had two hits apiece.
In the second game, Grace's chances were sparse in a 3-0 shutout. Grace was held without a run on five hits, while Spring Arbor scored three runs on six hits.
The Lady Lancers were unable to move a runner past first base until the fourth inning. Morgan Hutcheson led off the fourth with a single, and she was advanced to second with a sac bunt. The next two batters were retired, however, and the Cougars escaped unscathed.
In the seventh inning, Chandler Elliott doubled to give Grace hope. Garner singled to the outfield, but the game ended with a tagout at home plate.
Hutcheson had two of Grace's five hits. Sam Heim hit 1-for-2.
Hannah England threw all six innings for Grace, giving up six hits and two earned runs.
The Lady Lancers will enjoy three doubleheaders at home next week. Grace will host Goshen on Tuesday, Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Friday and Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.
