Game Recap: Softball |

Softball nearly upsets No. 10 St. Xavier

CLERMONT, Fla. - On the final day of their Spring Break trip, Grace's softball team split with Lourdes and No. 10 St. Xavier.

The Lady Lancers (6-8) defeated Lourdes 4-3 before missing on an upset of St. Xavier by the score of 10-8.

Against Lourdes, Grace took a 1-0 lead after scoring in the top of the first. Lourdes battled back to take the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Lancers climbed on top for good, however, in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally. Hannah Herbster and Sam Heim laced back-to-back RBI triples with two outs. Clarissa Knight then drove in Heim with a single on the next at-bat, capping off a three-run inning.

The Gray Wolves (4-5) led off their final at-bats with a solo home run, but Allison Franklin struck out two of the next three batters to stop Lourdes' rally one run short.

Herbster hit 2-for-4 with two runs and a steal, and Brittany Melzoni was 2-for-2. Heim and Chandler Elliott each batted 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Elliott also got the win from the mound, striking out two and giving up six hits in five innings. Franklin had four strikeouts in two innings of relief.

Against No. 10 St. Xavier, Grace produced 19 hits to nearly knock off the Cougars. St. Xavier jumped out to a 6-1 after three innings, but the Lady Lancers were prepared for a comeback.

Grace scored a run in each of the final four innings, including two apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

But St. Xavier ripped off four runs in the top of the sixth, and Grace was unable to bridge the gap by the game's end.

As a team, Grace outhit St. Xavier 19-12. Elliott and Kati Gregory were both 3-for-4 as Gregory doubled and drove in a pair.

Emily Bobb was 2-for-3 with a double and a sacrifice hit, and Abby Mozingo was 2-for-2 with two runs. Knight and Morgan Hutcheson each batted 2-for-3, and Heim notched two hits as well.

The Lady Lancers will kick off the Crossroads League season on March 15 at Huntington. Grace's home opener is March 21 against Purdue North Central.
