MARION, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan got the better of Grace's baseball team in a doubleheader on Monday.
The Lancers (15-17, 2-6 Crossroads League) were defeated 19-1 and 2-1 in eight innings in the games played under the lights.
In the opening game, Grace could not slow down the bats of the Wildcats (26-11, 7-3 CL). IWU ripped off an eight-run inning and a nine-run inning, outhitting the Lancers 23-5 overall.
Austin Baker hit 2-for-3 in a starting role, and Jakob Radjenovich was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jacob Hammel was Grace's most effective pitcher in the game, giving up one run in 1.2 innings.
The second game was an extra-innings pitchers' duel. Grace jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Cameron Maxwell led off the inning with a single, and he moved to third with a sac bunt and a fly ball. He then scampered home after a passed ball to put Grace on top.
But IWU responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. The game remained 1-1 through regulation, sending the game to extra innings.
Grace seemed prime to score in the top of the eighth. Hammel walked, and Radjenovich and Hepler produced back-to-back infield singles with two outs to load the bases. But the threat was snuffed out with a strikeout.
The Wildcats seized the chance to end the game in the bottom of the eighth. IWU scored the game-winning run on a Lancer throwing error to win the contest 2-1.
Logan Grigsby threw an impressive outing from the mound. He held the Wildcats to two hits in seven innings, striking out a career-high 11 batters in the process.
Overall, Grace outhit IWU 5-2 in the second game. Hepler batted 2-for-3 with a walk, and Maxwell was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
The Lancers will stay on the road Tuesday, heading to Bethel for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
