WINONA LAKE, Ind.—Grace College softball continued their winning streak from the weekend to six against Mount Vernon at the Miller Athletic Complex.
The Lancers (21-17, 12-8 Crossroads League) were able to pick up two wins Monday afternoon against the Lady Cougars (17-23, 10-15 CL)Â coming away as they won the first game 5 to 1 and the second game 10 to 1.
Kati Gregory got the first run of the game by sending a shot over the left field fence for her first home run of the season.
The first game was tied at one going into the fourth inning, but that was when Grace began to pull away. The Lancers manufactured two runs in the bottom of the fourth off a sac fly and an error.
Grace continued to take advantage of a second Mount Vernon error as the Lancers tacked on another run in the fifth. The Lancers scored their fifth and final run of the first game in the sixth inning off a Morgan Cody single.
The Cougars offense was kept at bay in the first game by the pitching of Elaina McClellan and Chandler Elliott. This combination has proven brutal for opposing teams in the last several contests.
Sam Heim and Ashley Kleinbub added two hits each to the Lancers offense in the first game.
Grace took advantage of six Mount Vernon errors in the second game to force the mercy rule after five innings.
The Lancers wasted no time getting their offense going as they put up five runs in the first inning. Grace put up six hits in the inning and stayed aggressive on the base paths as they swiped several bases off of Mount Vernon wild pitches.
Mount Vernon answered back in the top of the second with a run of their own. Grace responded by tacking on three more runs to their lead in the second inning. The Lancers didn't stop as the scored a run in both the third and fourth innings.
Hannah England pitched a five inning complete game as she kept the Cougar offense stagnant to enforce the mercy rule.
Heim and Clarissa Knight each produced three hits for the Lancers. Elliott produced two hits and two RBIs. Not to be outdone, Kyleigh Garner had two hits and three RBIs of her own.
The Lady Lancers will look to continue their modest winning streak as they take on the Cougars of Spring Arbor tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Miller Athletic Complex.
