ROSEMONT, Ill. - Grace's softball team enjoyed a doubleheader with Roosevelt at The Ballpark at Rosemont, the home of the Chicago Bandits.
The Lady Lancers (15-13) lost the opening game 12-4 before bouncing back for a thrilling 7-6 win in the second game.
The Lakers (6-20) displayed a potent offense in the opener, ending the game after five innings due to the run-rule. Roosevelt scored multiple runs in its first four innings thanks to seven extra-base hits.
Sam Heim drove in three of Grace's four runs in the game, including a two-run single in the second and a well-placed ground ball in the fifth.
The Lady Lancers were outhit 12-6 and committed two errors in defeat.
In the second game, Roosevelt jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second.Â
Grace countered with four runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Michaela Lee led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Chandler Elliott drove in a pair with a two-out single, and Kyleigh Garner's single brought in Elliott to make the score 4-3.
The Lakers plated twice in the fourth to reclaim the lead, but the Lady Lancers battled back with two runs of their own in the fifth. Heim doubled to the outfield to score Clarissa Knight and Elliott.
Grace tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, which proved to be the difference in the game. Mariah Roman led off the inning with a pinch-hit triple to center field, and Heim drove her in with a ground ball.
Roosevelt cut Grace's lead to one with a single tally in the sixth, and the Lakers threatened to win the game in the seventh. Roosevelt got back-to-back singles and moved the tying run to third base with two outs. But the final batter popped out to Grace's catcher Lee as Grace held on for the 7-6 win.
Heim was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, and Elliott had two runs and two RBIs. Knight was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, and Brittany Turner tripled and walked.
Elaina McClellan picked up the win from the mound, surrendering two earned runs on six hits in four innings. Hannah England tossed three solid innings in relief, allowing three hits.
The Lady Lancers resume Crossroads League action next week and travel to No. 21 Marian on Tuesday.
