ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The 2016 season started on a bright note for Grace's volleyball team with two wins on Friday.
The Lady Lancers swept both Rochester and Lawrence Tech in the opening day of the Concordia Tournament. Grace will end the tourney on Saturday against Siena Heights and Concordia.
In their season opener, the Lady Lancers made short work of Rochester. Grace won 25-17, 25-16 and 25-18 in a dominant performance.Â
The Warriors were held to just 13 kills in the match on a -.052 hitting percentage, while Kari Feddema had 11 kills by herself on a .529 percentage. As a team Grace had 37 kills at a .200 clip.
The second set was Grace's most efficient as the offense had 14 kills on 27 attempts.
Taylor Baird passed out 33 assists in a strong showing, and Savannah Hart had 5 kills, 5 aces and 2 block assists.
Kelsee Zuidema finished with nine kills, and Sierra Smith added six. Sara Miller, Kaitlin Kerrigan and Caylie Teel had 10 digs apiece, and Alexa Hill tallied seven digs and three aces in her first collegiate match.
After coasting in the first two sets against Lawrence Tech, things got interesting in the third set.
The Lady Lancers coasted to 25-15 and 25-14 wins in the opening two games, posting a team hitting percentage of at least .350 in each set.
The third game proved to be a nail biter and went into extra points. Grace eventually scored two points in a row to pull away with a 27-25 victory to secure the team's second sweep.
Smith led Grace's offense with eight kills, and Marta Bleed was perfect with five kills on five swings.
Hill had 14 assists and seven digs, and Baird added 13 assists. Hart had six kills on a .857 percentage, Tori Bontrager added five kills and three block assists, and Teel led all players with 15 digs.
