UPLAND, Ind. - While Grace's volleyball team lost in straight sets at Taylor on Wednesday, the match was far from a one-sided affair.
The Lady Lancers (6-8, 1-4 Crossroads League) had a legitimate chance in every game, but the Trojans (7-6, 4-1 CL) found a way to pull out the win at the end each time.
In the opening set, Taylor held a slight lead through the later stages and eventually pulled ahead 23-19. But Grace rallied to tie the score with four straight points thanks to kills from Kaitlin Kerrigan, Taylor Baird and Kelsee Zuidema. The Lady Lancers proceeded to commit two attack errors on the next two rallies, handing the first set to Taylor 25-23.
The second set seemed to be going Grace's way. The Lady Lancers broke open an 11-11 deadlock and gained a 19-16 advantage after a kill from Tori Bontrager.
The Trojans found a rhythm at that point, however, and Grace could not respond. Taylor ended the set with a 9-0 run to snatch another win; the Trojans had kills on seven of those nine points.
The third and final set proved to have a similar theme. Grace had a 20-17 lead and looked poised to extend the match at 23-21. But Taylor scored three straight, forcing Grace to survive a match point.
The set went to extra points where the Trojans ended the match 28-26 after a Taylor kill and an attack error by Grace.
For the match, Grace had 48 kills on a .170 percentage compared to 50 kills on a .276 percentage for Taylor. Zuidema led Grace with a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs.
Baird also had a double-double of 38 assists and 12 digs to go along with four kills and two aces. Kerrigan nearly had a third double-double in the match for Grace, tallying eight kills and 16 digs.
Sierra Smith finished with nine kills, and Kari Feddema had six kills and two solo blocks. Caylie Teel led all players with 24 digs.
The Lady Lancers will finish the week on the road, playing at Spring Arbor on Friday and at St. Francis on Saturday.
